Bodie is an original mining town from the late 1800's. What's left today stands in a state of "arrested decay" and is maintained by the California State Parks System, who took over the town in 1962 to make it a State Historic Park. Newspapers report that towns people would ask in the mornings "Have a man for breakfast?" Meaning 'Did anyone get killed last night?' nice movie of the town. map Directions: Bodie is located in the Basin Range of the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains, about13 miles East of Highway 395in central California.

Mono Lake is a large, shallow saline soda lake in Mono County, California, formed at least 760,000 years ago as a terminal lake in a endorheic basin. The lack of an outlet causes high levels of salts to accumulate in the lake. http://www.monolake.org/ map
11. Devil's Postpile National Monument
Current studies suggest that the Postpile was formed less than 100,000 years ago when a cooling lava flow cracked into multi-sided columns. However, to fully understand the geologic setting of the Postpile we must go back millions of years to a time when there was no Sierra Nevada and California was a shallow sea. more Pets:Pets are allowed in the campground and day use areas as well as on trails but must be on a leash at all times within the monument. Owners are responsible for cleaning up after their pets. Disposable plastic bags are provided at the monument trailhead for your convenience. Directions map

After the easy, 1.5 mile walk to Rainbow Falls from the Red's Meadow area, the roar of the falls and the refreshing mists invite you to stay awhile and enjoy a picnic lunch. Be sure to bring your camera-midday, when the sun is highest, is the best time capture rainbows in the mist. getting there: Most visitors must park at the Mammoth Mountain Ski Area and use the mandatory shuttle. The shuttle bus operates from mid-June through the Wednesday after Labor Day.

The Mammoth Lakes Basin is a large glacial cirque basin that was carved by the grinding movement of glacial ice and rocks entrained within the ice. The lakes in the lower basin, including Lake Mary, Lake George, and Horseshoe Lake, fill depressions in glacial moraine deposits. The lakes in the upper basin, including Duck Lake, Shelton Lakes, and Deer Lakes, fill depressions in the underlying bedrock from metamorphosed sedimentary rocks that were scooped out by glaciers. Some of the lakes have marinas with boats for rent or you can bring your own. Any kind of recreative activity you can think of is available: fishing, hiking, biking, skiing, sledding.... it is a vast playground!
